October 26, 2023, Souda (Chania) Crete Greece, 11am to 9:30pm, Zuiderdam Grand Africa cruise

Sorry for the delay in posting and updating this blog. First the site that hosts my blog was down for maintenance and when I tried to logon they had changed my user id. It’s tough enough when I’m at home dealing with technical issues and it’s a tad more complicated when trying to do everything at sea on the internet. They sent a code to my phone to verify it was really me! It was a good thing we were still in port when that happened or I’d still be in the dark! Anyway, enjoy!

We got off the ship with Pat and Cyndi and caught the city shuttle bus from Souda to Chania, which is a resort town with a lot of ancient buildings and the second largest city in Crete. Roundtrip was 3 Euros per person. We were left off in the city center. We first made our way to the municipal market which was housed in an old building and was being renovated, and therefore not open.

The city is built around a very picturesque ancient Venetian port. Traveling down the side streets toward the harbor we found a lot of cute shops, art galleries and eating places. We also found some old buildings and churches/mosques but the only one that was open was a Byzantine church where we weren’t supposed to take pictures. Being a rule breaker, I got one picture off before getting caught.  We eventually made our way to the harbor and walked the sea wall to the lighthouse and then back again. We made our way through neighborhoods and headed towards the fortress located at the other end of the harbor, taking the LONG way!! After the fortress we found a spot on the waterfront to get a bite to eat and rest our feet. A little more retail therapy followed before we got back on the shuttle bus and returned to the ship. Jeff called it an early night because he forgot to wear his foot brace for his plantar fasciitis and his feet were killing him. After two more rounds of trivia and a set at the Rolling Stone Lounge I called it a night. Total steps today – 19,000.

When I got up the next morning (late), Jeff said his feet were hurting too bad so I brought breakfast back to the room for us. I texted my mom and told her “I think I broke my husband yesterday!”
